Home Schooling Works!
A study recently published by professor Lawrence Rudner, director of the Educational Resources Information Center Clearinghouse on Assessment and Evaluation at the University of Maryland in America shows that those parents choosing to make a commitment to home schooling are able to provide a very successful academic environment.

HOME-SCHOOLING REGULATIONS:
The national Department of education has issued a draft policy to provide for national norms and standards for the registration and monitoring of home education. Representatives of the National Coalition of Home Schoolers, Assocation for Home Schooling, Eastern Cape Homeschooling Association, KwaZulu-Natal Homeschooling Association, Pestalozzi Trust, and Western Cape Homeschooling Association attended a meeting in Pretoria on 6th May to discuss the proposed policy. The delegation was accompanied by a legal adviser, Prof Hans Visser of the Inter University Centre for Education Law and Policy, and by an adviser from the child care sciences, Dr Vuyo Mpumlwana, a pediatric neuropsychologist from Medunsa, who is also a home schooling mother.

The discussions were marked by polite distrust on both sides. The business of the day was confined to reconnaisance of some of the principles involved. It was  agreed that a further meeting would be arranged to  address particular concerns relating to the draft policy. In the final analysis, the most prominent feature of the meeting was the extent to which it served to affirm the status of home education as an independent and legitimate education choice for families.  Nevertheless, it was clear that the perceptions of the government delegation were very far removed from the pedagogical reality of home education, and that much work remains to be done to inform the responsible officials.
A copy of the draft is available here.

END OF YEAR PRIZE-GIVING:

The WCHSA will be organising an end of year farewell for all home-schooled Matric students, as well as a prize giving for all grades! Each child will receive a certificate of achievement as well as a book prize, which is to be provided by the parents. We feel that our children deserve recognition for all their hard work and effort during the course of their studies. We will be displaying examples of these certificates at the next information meeting on 12th June. Comments and suggestions from all of you will be most welcome in order to finalize a pleasing design. Please help us to make this a successful venture for the sake of all our children!
Towards the end of the year, we will also be holding a Sports Day, possibly in conjunction with the Spring Fair. Dates will be confirmed in future newsletters.
